**Mom of two angels in Heaven** asked:

I want to decorate my apartment patio, with plants and flowers. I don’t really know alot about plants and flowers. There is some sun on my balcony during the day but not alot, it is covered. I wont have a problem watering them everyday but I don’t need some plants that require ALOT of care. Maybe if yall could just tell me some names of plants, any good places to get them, like plant stores and what not. Thanks a bunch.

You finally have a wonderful patio set up in your backyard and the only thing you need now is a set of patio furniture. But what style should you choose? There are many styles available including everything from fabric and wood, PVC frames with vinyl seats, and even cast iron patio furniture. Below are but a few reasons why cast iron patio furniture might be the best choice for your patio.

Sense of Style

A set of cast iron patio furniture instantly gives a sense of class and sophistication to your patio area. They come in a multitude of colors, including rust-red, gold, silver, hunter-green, and of course the classic black. Also, the intricate designs of flowers, plants, or other garden features carved out of the cast iron will definitely add another conversation piece to your garden party.

Versatility

Of course, cast iron patio furniture is known to compliment every fashion trend in patio covers and cushion that you can throw at it. Just about any color and any type of material that one can bring to the patio can be incorporated into the theme with a good set of cast iron patio furniture.

Ease of Care

Unlike many sets of patio furniture, which require a lot of labor intensive maintenance to keep their show-room beauty, cast iron patio furniture requires very little care. Usually a quick wipe down with a damp cloth or a quick dusting with a rag is all that is needed to keep the furniture looking wonderful. In fact, the cushions on the wrought iron chairs will probably require more care than any of the pieces of cast iron.

Quality Construction

Many sets of patio furniture today are mass produced in such a way that sometimes the quality of the construction is suspect. With a set of cast iron patio furniture, however, the construction is sure to be solid and of quality work. A piece of furniture that is based upon welds and iron can most certainly stand up to the rigors of outdoor life better than one based on plastic and screws.

As you can plainly see, there are a number of reasons why cast iron patio furniture might just be the best choice to liven up your brand new patio space. Because of its classic styling, quality construction, and ease of maintenance, this type of patio furniture can become a welcome addition to your garden party.

With the increased new trend in outdoor living, which has undoubtedly been by TV Gardening DIY programs, we are all spending more money on our garden and patio areas. Creating an inspirational outdoor living space is something we can all do, with a wide range of hard and soft landscaping products, lighting, decorations and garden accessories available widely on the market.

Some of the latest innovations are in garden heating which allows us to spend more of our precious leisure time enjoying our garden or patio area, be it for entertaining family and guests or simply for relaxing. Gas patio Heaters provide instant controllable heat and warmth, thus making your outside room as comfortable and enjoyable as any of your inside rooms. On days when the temperature is not as warm as one would like, the patio heater can be turned on to give off a heat circle of around 6 metres and gas patio heaters come into their own after sun set, when they create atmospheres from party to tranquil.

When choosing a gas patio heaters always ensure that it has the necessary safety features such as; a tilt sensor, which will cut off the gas and flame if the patio heater is knocked or blown over whilst in use and also an auto shut off switch will cut off the gas if the flame is blown out.

Patio heaters come in many shapes and sizes, but by far the most popular are the upright standing heater, sometimes available with a circular table around the gas bottle housing, and the table top patio heater. Heat output is measured in Kilowatts and sizes range from 12 kw up to 15kw gas patio heaters, which are usually used for pub, hotel and commercial environments. Finished gas patio heaters usually range from coloured powder coated to the more expensive stainless steel models. The main difference in finishes relate to the likely life of the heater. Stainless steel patio heaters look by far the most impressive and will keep their lustre for many years. Powder coated patio heaters tend to weather slightly less well and will rust if the powder coating is damaged.

Table top heaters are very popular but are a lot smaller and also have a much smaller heat output but they are a very effective way of providing heat to people immediately around the garden table.

Accessories for Patio heaters include covers ( which are a must is you intend to leave it outside during the winter), wheels — which will enable you to easily move the heater around the garden, ballast tanks which give extra stability and most good patio heaters actually come with a gas bottle regulator installed and ready for easy attachment.

Patio heaters run off bottles gas, mainly butane but sometime propane which is widely available in the UK and most other countries. The regulator which is usually supplied with the heater, clips straight onto the bottle and is easy to install. Gas regulators are supplied by all gas bottle suppliers, but ensure that you take you gas bottle along to the dealer as there are varying sizes of bottle head.

Patio heaters require very little maintenance if any at all, and will give extend your time in your garden or on you patio.

Some safety points worth remembering are;

Position in a fairly sheltered area, as this will both reduce the likelihood of damage in strong winds and also increase the amount of ambient heat output. If the heater is outdoors during the winter, buy a patio heater cover and protect you heater with it.Always leave the gas bottle in the heater to give it extra weight. If you patio heater comes supplied with a ballast tank in the base, fill it with sand or if none is available, use water but mix car anti-freeze with it, otherwise the tank may crack when freezing occurs in winter.Do not let children use the patio heater as a toy or climbing frame.

Enjoy long nights throughout the year with your patio heater — your life will take a new turn into outdoor living.

I have a patio set (table and four chairs) on my deck and I put a canvas cover on it. It’s pretty heavy and durable, but it keeps blowing off on windy days. Any tips for keeping it from blowing off? I guess I could put huge rocks on top of the table or something, but I think that wouldn’t look too attractive. Thanks!

My darling hubby and I are planning on pouring a concrete slab patio. We have a patio door that exits to this patio and needs about a three and a half foot flight of stairs. DH and I are a little confused about the most cost efficient way to construct steps. We want something that will go well with the concrete or patio stones so I don’t believe wood will work very well and we’re not sure exactly how to set up a frame to pour steps, set brick steps or build a frame that we can disguise with patio stones and concrete slab treads. I have enclosed a few links to pictures for the latter of the options. Thank you for any help!

Brandon Hopkins asked:

High quality patio furniture can be downright expensive. Depending on the style, materials and quality you could easily pay $2,000 for a nice patio set with a patio cover, patio chairs and a patio table.

Considering this price range, most people buy cheap patio sets that will wear out within a few years. The other option is to buy that same high quality patio furniture, but at a discount by utilizing these three easy tips.

Most people fail to realize that using just a few well thought out ideas can save you thousands of dollars not just on patio furniture, but just about every purchase you make. Before buying something expensive think about these things. Is now the best time to buy? Is everything clamoring over the same item? Is this time of year going to be more expensive? Can I buy it cheaper online? Is there a particular model or style that is less expensive this year? Can I buy last years model at a discounted price? Do I want to just buy cheaper discounted patio furniture?

1. Buy when nobody else is buying.

Everyone wants to update their patio when spring comes. This is the perfect time because then you’re able to enjoy your patio furniture all during summer and even into the warm fall nights. This makes sense because you will have more time to enjoy that discount patio furniture.

This however is absolutely the worst time to buy. Everyone wants patio furniture at this time and businesses know that. Why would they give you 50% off if the guy behind you will pay full price? This is simply supply and demand. If the seller has 10 buyers willing to pay full price and 10 items in stock, you probably will not be getting any kind of discount patio furniture.

Instead, consider buying at the end of the summer season when that same business is trying to get rid of their summer supplies. This may not be ideal because the time to enjoy your new patio furniture has passed, but next year you’ll have a $2,000 patio set that you only paid $1,000 for, and it will last for many years!

2. Buy where stock is high.

If a business sells 3 patio sets per year, there is a good chance they don’t get much of a price break from the manufacturer or distributor. Somewhere like Costco that sells 30,000 or more patio sets per year probably gets a much better price than the guy who buys 3 patio sets to sell. Where do you think the savings will show up?

3. Get a good warranty.

If the business selling your patio furniture says the warranty is 30 days, or the furniture is being sold “As-Is”, turn around and walk out.

Patio furniture is notorious for fading, cracking and just falling apart. If you spend a good deal of money on your patio furniture and it falls apart, you’ll want to take it back. Odds are your 30 day warranty has already ran out.

When shopping for high quality patio furniture, keep these three easy tips in mind and save some money!

At any given time when I come out onto my patio in the afternoon, I have quite a few flies swarming around. There is no refuse on the patio — only a couple of chairs, hanging plants, and a BBQ. Nothing that I think would attract flies. They aren’t swarming around anything specifically, either, so I think that they might just like the semi-enclosed nature of the patio as a way to get away from the breeze??? Does anyone have any ideas as to how to get rid of them? If not permenantly, at least for having BBQ’s and such? Do Citranella candles work for flies? Thanks in advance!

John Stidolph asked:

Teak, a mixed yellow-brown wood that is well known for its radiance, durability, and strength, is used in gorgeous furniture. Especially high-grade furniture like teak patio furniture. The reason why teak is used for patio furniture is because teak is highly resistant to bugs and because teak is such a hard wood, it is also extremely resistant to warping over time or because of the weather. If you don’t believe that teak patio furniture is durable enough, here is a well-known fact - teak has been used for decks, railings, even seating on boats. That’s right, on ships for years! Things that are in constant contact with the weather. Getting a teak patio furniture piece is one way to ensure you’ll have something to pass on to future generations.

Teak patio furniture, despite the durability of the wood itself, still need to be properly cared for and maintained with this in mind. When you purchase your teak patio furniture, ask whether there is a warranty against things the wood should be naturally resistant to. If your patio is covered, you probably don’t pay much attention to the care and maintenance of your teak patio furniture.

After all, your patio is covered, so for the most part your teak patio furniture is protected from the most of the weather. However, if your patio is not covered and exposed full time to the elements, it might be a good idea to cover your teak patio furniture in order to protect it. This is more important if your teak patio furniture is something that you use only rarely. Your teak patio furniture is an important piece of furniture and can be just as expensive as your regular dining room table.

There is a point in time when not taking care of your teak patio furniture is more appropriate than proper care and that is when you want your teak patio furniture to take on the weathered silver-gray look that is especially stunning on a patio. However, if you choose not to go with the silver-gray, a patio furniture cover might be what you’re looking for in the way of protection.

The choice of material is important, so be sure to do your research on your teak patio furniture cover. You’ll want a heavy material that’s weather resistant and is going to offer padding against bumps and other things hitting your teak patio furniture. No matter what you choose, picking a teak patio furniture piece is one way to have a lasting piece of fine furniture for generations.
